Basic principles of batch and continuous dyeing processes aqre described in terms of the equipment used to dye a variety of textiles. The selection of equipment and process depends on the substrate and fiber type, the size of the dye lot, and the quality requirements. Batch dyeing can be divided into three categories depending on whether the substrate and/or dyebath are circulated. Batch equipment includes becks, jigs, jets, package dyeing machines, skein dyeing machines, paddle machines, rotary drum machines, and tumblers. The continuous dyeing of polyester/cellulose blends and long chain dye ranges for warp dyeing are discussed. 3 refs.
