The Cotton 1998 conference highlighted new developments in cotton processing, dyeing, and finishing. New testing machines include the Quickwash Plus for determining fabric shrinkage. Partitioned into five pie shaped sections, the unit uses a microprocessor to sort up to nine different laundering programs. One cycle of the Quickwash Plus equals five cycles of the AATCC TM 135. A new single cycle diagnostic test indicates the degree of shade change in a dyed substrated during laundering and will become an ISO standard in 1999. BASF's RAISA computer program provides product and process information on exhaust and continuous dyeing with indanthrene dyes. The Diresul EV range of environmentally friendly sulfur dyes contains no heavy metals or absorbable organohalogens. Kleinewefer's new Fiber Set process treats cotton fabrics in liquid ammonia to improve shrink resistance, pilling, abrasion resistance, and dye absorption properties.
