A research project a North Carolina State University to develop a simultaneous dyeing and finishing process will probably achieve this objective by the use of dyes that finish, as well as color, fibers. Preliminary experiments will focus on the design and synthesis of dyes that impart water resistance. These dyes are disperse or fiber reactive dyes that have either perfluoro groups or fatty alkyl groups for use on cotton. Ongoing research involves the purification and instrumental analysis of these dyes to evaluate their technical properties and surface characteristics. Instrumental analysis uses electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance.
