An introduction to electrochemical processing technology as an alternative to conventional reducing agents highlights indigo dyeing (indirect reduction), exhaust vat dyeing (indirect reduction), sulfur dyes (indirect and direct reduction), and direct electrolysis for color stripping of azo dye effluent. In electrochemical reduction, electrons introduced into the dyebath via an electrolytic process replace conventional reducing chemicals. Advantages of regenerable reducing agents include simplified control and regulation of the dyeing process, controleed mass balance, enhanced control of reducing agent entry into the dyebath, prevention of dyebath changes on machine stoppage, optimized dyeing conditions and reproducibility, improved ecological profiles of vat and sulfur dyes, elimination of unregenerable reducing agents, lower water cnsumption, and simplified effluent treatment.
