Research on the use of supercritical fluid (SCF) technology in the textile industry focused on disperse dyeing from supercritical carbon and the development of a detector system that permits the study of SCF extraction in real time. The objective was to generate quantitative data that compare SCF carbon dioxide dyeing with high temperature aqueous dyeing using a series of four disperse dyes. A summary of new research related to the chemistry of SCFs focuses on supercritical and subcritical water. An apparatus was designed and constructed for the study of SCF dyeing and modified to allow for the incorporation of separate cells for the dye and sample. The dyebath is also recirculated through the fiber sample as in a conventional package dyeing machine. 22 refs.
