The objective of research on the biological renovation and reuse of spent reactive dyebaths is to evaluate the performance of anaerobic/anoxic biological treatments and a low cost fixed film bioreactor system as decolorization and reuse technologies. Experiments involved the study of nine commercial reactive dyes (Black 5; Blue 4, 7, and 19; Red 2 and 120; and Yellow 3, 15, and 17). Decolorization assays of simulated reactive dyebaths used an anaerobic, methanogenic culture at low salt concentrations, as well as a halotolerant culture maintained under microaerophilic conditions and elevated salt concentrations. Tests of the decolorization of a spent dyebath from a package dyeing facility and a simulated dyebath composed of three dyes used a suspended growth, methanogenic culture. The Red 2 solution decolorized by the halotolerant culture under anoxic conditions was used as dye liquor and compared with conventional reacgtive dyeing. 9 refs.
