Use of Cyclodextrins for Improving Waste Air Washers.

To improve waste air purification processes, reserchers tested the effectivenes of cyclodextrings as a chemical aid. Experiments involved laboratory scale machines that separate orgainc material from the gas pahse. A. Hewlet Packard GC 5890 series 11 plus and a MSD 5972 gas chromatorgraph determined the concentration of such organic substances as toluene, chlorobenzene, 1,2 dichlorobzene, 2-chlorophenol, xylene, n-butanol n-pentanol, n-butylamine, and n-pentylamine. Results indicated that only toluene, chlorobenzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 2-chlorophenol, and xylene fromed insoluble complexes with beta-cyclodextrin that a biological wastewater detoxifying treatment easily treats the wastewater from the air washing process, and that the presence of cyclodextrins increased the degradation processes of toxic substances. 9 refs.
