The chemical structure, chemical action, and physical properties of optical brightening agents are described. Optical brightening of polyesters, polyolefins, polyacrylonitrile, polyamides, polyurethanes, cellulosics, and plastics is discussed. The application of optical brightening agents to a new screen printing process and to analytical methods using lasers is described. 8 refs.
