Treatment of 100 percent cotton fabric with alkaline reagents at room temperature showed significant increases in percentage area shrinkage with increasing alkali concentration. The reagents used were Na2SiO3, NH4OH, KOH, and NaOH. For each reagent, the area shrinkage decreased with increasing temperature of treatment. Dye fixation measurements on bleached cotton pretreated with alkaline reagents showed significantly higher dye build-up on samples treated with NaOH compared with those treated with KOH, or with bleached but untreated materials. The samples pretreated with NH4OH and Na2SiO3 showed no significant improvements in reactive dye fixation relative to the untreated cotton fabric. 5 refs.
