Physico-chemical methods are used to activate manmade fibers for dyeing. These methods increase the accessibility of the molecule to dyes by weakening intermolecular bonds. Microwave, ultrasound, or magnetic radiation, heat, and/or solvents are used. By combining these activators, dyeability can be increased at lower temperatures and with less solvent than conventional methods. The use of saturated and super-heated vapor from an azeotropic mixture of benzene and water exemplifies this new technology. 12 refs.
