Processes for dyeing wool with Parijataka flower dye are examined. Parijataka is a jasmine-like shrub or small tree belonging to the olive family. It is cultivated throughout India. The bright orange flowers contain a coloring matter called nyctanthin. Optimum conditions for dye extraction, dye concentration, mordant concentration, and the best mordanting methods were obtained. For dyeing wool, a concentration of 1 gram Parijataka dye in 100 milliliters of water was best. The best color on 1 gram of wool was obtained by using concentrations of 0.20 percent of alum, 0.04 percent of copper sulfate, 0.04 percent of stannous chloride, 0.04 percent of ferrous sulfate, and 0.04 percent of chrome. Post mordanting was the best method for all mordants except stannous chloride. 4 refs.
