A study evaluated the influence of supercritcal carbon dioxide as a dyeing medium on the crystalline structures of highly oriented semicrystalline unmodified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers. Electron microscopy and X-ray analyses also evaluated the effect of supercritical fluid dyeing on fine structure of PET fibers. Data collection methods included the use of a two circle goniometer with a position sensitive detector to observe the crystallinites of variously treated fibers, small angle X-ray measurements along the meridian to elucidate the two phase fibrillar structure, and Bragg's law along with model and experimental curves to evaluate the long period. Supercritical carbon dioxide fluid increased the total crystallinity of the polymer fiber. Temperature had a greater impact on crystalline structure than did not medium used. 23 refs.
