An overview of continuous washing processes to remove sizes, chemicals, dyes, print thickeners, and other materials from cotton and cotton blend fabrics describes the washing process according to academic and commercial publications; washing machinery, including history and features common to all washers (steam, compressed air, motorl and speed control, and automation). Specific thypes of washing machinery, including rope washers, open width washers (entry field, spreaders, edge guiders, guide rolls, and open width washing compartments), drum washers, spray or jet washers, slack or relaxation washers (nips, heat recovery, and exit field); and energy and water use in washers. Since the late 1960s, a better understanding of washing practice led to improved machine design. The vertical (roller box) washing machine, a steam tight box with low ballast liquor and 20-30 meters fabric content, continues to dominate washing operations due to its simplicity. 186 refs.
