Standard anthraquinone disperse dyes, which are used for bright red and bright blue shades in the dyeing of polyester blends, are poorly wet-fast, expensive, and--due to the presence of mercury in their manufacture--environmentally hazardous. The formation, structure, and wetfastness properties of several new alternative types of dyes for polyester blends are described. Alkali-clearable, one-bath disperse dyes improve dyeing efficiency by 30 percent and produce a relatively "clean" waste effluent. Thiophene-based azo and benzodifuranone dyes exhibit good wetfastness and cost less to manufacture. 6 refs.
