The effect of ultrasound on diffusion of CI Direct Red 81 in a cellulose film was examined. The diffusion and permeability coefficients and the time lag were calculated for a control and for 40 and 50 percent ultrasound. Both coefficients increased significantly with ultrasound. Irradiating the film directly or using higher ultrasonic power could further increase the coefficients. It has been shown that ultrasound can increase production rates in other sectors of textile finishing, particularly in preparation for finishing. However, there is some question about the application's economic viability. The use of ultrasound may decrease effluent by increasing add-on and by decreasing consumption of dyes and other chemicals.
