Fabrics heated to 300 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit in tenter frames, dryers, ovens, and cure boxes produce a blue-gray smoke. Pollution control agencies are increasingly requiring abatement of this smoke. Applicable smoke abatement equipment includes after-burners, scrubbers, condensation filters, and the Beltran electrostatic precipitator. Selection of smoke abatement equipment must consider initial cost, operating cost, and maintenance requirements. The major advantage of an electrostatic precipitator is that it requires very little energy to remove textile oil smoke. Precipitators can be installed in a modular fashion over time.
