Level dyeings are more difficult to achieve on wool than on other fibers. Three strategies can be adopted: blending stock- and top-dyed wool with batch-to-batch variations; boiling wool with low molecular weight dyes, which results in migration; and controlling the wool's rate of uptake with high molecular weight dyes. Various classes of dyes are reviewed for their leveling ability, other properties, and costs. The addition of leveling agents significantly increases processing costs.
