The transport of dye in the boundary layer of fiber assemblies was examined. Mass transfer mechanisms for flow, diffusion, and adsorption transport were qualitatively characterized. Flow transport depended on the type of dyeing process; diffusion transport depended on the chemical properties of the substrate and dye; adsorption transport depended on the chemical properties of the dye and auxiliaries. Approximation formulas that define the boundary flow layer were derived. The thickness of the boundary layer was found to be critically affected by the density of the fiber assembly and by the fiber type; dye throughput and quantity had only a negligible effect on the thickness of the boundary layer. 3 refs.
