The effect of urea and analogous products on cellulosic dyed or printed with reactive dyes was studied. Any improvement in dye yield with the addition of urea was shown to depend on water solubility, dye reactivity, and dyeing conditions. Urea acted hydrotropically during padding; however, its function during dye fixation could not be defined. Dye fixation depended on the type of dye, substrate, and process. Dyes with low reactivity always increased dye fixation; highly reactive dyes only showed this effect if they were not readily soluble in water. Simiar results were obtained with analogous products, such as urea derivatives, polyethylene glycols, and dicyandiamides. 30 refs.
