CAD/CAM systems in printing are used in screen preparation, color formulas, and automation of production control. CAD/CAM systems have replaced conventional operations in screen preparation, which were costly, labor-intensive, and time-consuming. The development of laser engraving linked with CAD/CAM represents a major advance in screen preparation. This modular, integrated system can separate colors and scan, edit, and manipulate color patterns on an image processor. A graphic function serves to create new designs. The design is recorded on tapes or optical disks for subsequent film plotting, direct screen engraving with a laser, or the production of color samples on an link-jet printer. In some cases, the costly strike-off process can be eliminated.
