Printing polyester/cellulose blends represents approximately 25 percent of printing; pigments are used in greater than 90 percent of these prints. Problems with hand and drape are significant with pigment prints. Printing with dyes includes the use of single dyes and mixtures in one- and two-phase systems. Important single dye systems have been Du Pont's Dybin dyes, BASF's Cellestren dyes, and Mitsubishi's reactive disperse dyes. Disperse dyes have been frequently mixed with other dyes, such as pigments, vat dyes, stabilized azoic dyes, and reactive dyes, with varying levels of success. One- and two-phase printing with disperse and reactive dyes are described. A newer strategy uses a catalyst at the print paste stage that causes a quaternization reaction under neutral conditions on the chlorine atom on monochloro-s-triazine reactive dyes. These conditions are optimal for the fixation of Dispersol PC dyes on polyester. 65 refs.
