Researchers tested the viscoelastic properties of supercritical carbon dioxide treated gel spun polyethylene and polypropylene to determine the optimal conditions for dyeing without fiber damage. Data showed that treatment of polyolefin fibers in supercritical carbon dioxide at temperatures of up to 120 degrees centigrade and pressures of 280 bar caused no significant fiber damage. Fibers with a low degree of crystallinity or draw ratio showed significant fiber shrinkage and increased elongation at break at temperatures above 100 degrees centigrade. The second paper in the series will present the dyeing results on polyolefin fibers in carbon dioxide. numerous refs.
