Researchers dyed low and high draw ratio gel spun polyethylene (PE) fibers, polypropylene (PP) fibers, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers in supercritical carbon dioxide at 280 bar and in water under optimal dyeing conditions and evaluated color, lightfastness, and washfastness. Reflectance measurements showed that disperse azo dyes with a naphthalene moiety gave deeper colors in both media than did benzoazo or anthraquinone dyes. The PP fibers dyed with the naphthylazo dyes showed a value of five for lightfastness and washfastness at 40 degrees centigrade, whereas the PE and PET fibers showed lowder values. numerous refs.
