Textiles with highly efficient ion exchange properties have applications in the removal of surfactants from wastewater. Because of its complexity, however, problems associated with this process have not been definitively solved. Research on these textiles used anion and cation active chemisorptive polyacrylonitrile fibers with a range of ionogenic groups. Experiments packed separation columns with ground fibers from 3-5 millimeters in length and passed wastewater that contained surfactant at a concentration of 13.95 milligrams per liter at a rate of 8 milliliters per minute under static and dynamic conditions. Measurements included removal efficiency, effect of flow scheme on removal efficiency, kinetic curves of sorption, and exchange capacity versus duration of exposure to sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid at varying concentrations. 3 refs.
