Researchers developed a hybrid technology, consisting of membrane separation followed by sonication and wet oxidation, to treat the wastewater of dyeing plants using reactive dyes. In experiments with the reactive dye solution in water, a nanofiltration membrane effectively concentrated the dye. The concentrate was then treated with a wet oxidation process. Kinetic studies performed with and without a catalyst at 170-215 degrees centigrade demonstrated color destruction of greater than 99 percent. After process parameters were fixed, studies with the actual dye waste stream revealed that it was refractory for wet oxidation under the above conditions. Sonication of the concentrate obtained after membrane filtration in the presence of copper sulfate rendered the waste stream amenable to wet oxidation. Sonication followed by wet oxidation was more effective at near neutral conditions can at alkaline conditions. 34 refs.
