The appearance of surface colors on textile is a function of the character of the prevailing illumination under which the color surface is viewed; the interaction of the illuminating radiation with the colored species in the surface layers; and the ability of the radiation that is transmitted, reflected, and scattered from the colored surface to induce the sensation of color in the human eye/brain system. An introduction to the role of light in the perception of color addresses light, color physics, and color technology; light, color, and the electromagnetic spectrum; Planckian radiators and color temperature; daylight and the CIE standard illuminants; sources of artificial light; properties of artificial light sources; color matching booths and visual color matching; interactions of light with matter; light abosrption, reflection, and color; light interaction with atoms and molecules; and photophysics, photochemistry, and lightfastness. 20 refs.
