Researchers disperse dyed polypropylene fabric and film at 80 degrees centigrade. After several hours of boiling in double distilled water, both materials proved to be completely colorfast. When the wash liquor contained a surfactant, the materials were completely decolorized in a short time. As a result, researchers studied the mass transfer between the polymer and the fluid phase. Variables of the desorption experiment were elution time, flow rate, surfactant concentration, and liquor volume. Dye extinction in the wash liquor was measured. In each case, the colorimetric L values for each fabric layer were determined individually. A mathematical model determined the mass transfer coefficient from experimental data and proved to be an objective measure of colorfastness. 6 refs.
