Researchers compared the use of supercritical carbon dioxide dyeing on commercially available polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers with conventional dyeing methods. Fibers were examined for degree of polymerization and microstructure after dyeing with C.I. Disperse Blue 60. The measured value of color deepness (K/S) indicated that fibers with a higher crystallinity dyed a deeper color, which contradicted the accepted theory of dyeing. Microscopic observation of fiber cross section and measurement of dye uptake indicated that supercritical carbon dioxide dyeing produced a deeper color. PET with a low molecular weight and/or a small optical birefringence value showed high dye uptake. 14 refs.
