Researchers developed two environmentally friendly processes for dyeing cotton fabrics with reactive, sulfur, and vat dyes. The new processes use environmentally friendly chemicals and recycle low load effluents to reduce the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in dye facility wastewater. The processes reduce BOD and COD, respectively, by up to 7.65 percent and 17.27 percent for reactive dyeing, 2.10 percent and 5.78 percent for sulfur dyeing, and 11.41 percent and 17.92 percent for vat dyeing. The Eco-Process II process that reuses low load effluents achieves a 38.70 percent savings n water consumption in reactive dyeing, a 50 percent savings in sulfur dyeing, and a 83.33 percent savings in vat dyeing. 11 refs.
