Researchers developed a method of modifying lyocell fibers that enables the dyeing of cellulosic fabric with anionic wool dyes (acid and reactive dyes) in short periods of time (5 minutes) at mild conditions (60 degrees centigrade and pH 4.2) homogeneously over the entire fiber cross section. Degree of modification determined the depth of shade of the dyed fibers. The method was based on the activation of lyocell using epichlorohydrin catalyzed with Zn(BF(4))(2) or a 0.01 mole aqueous caustic soda solution. Amination was performed with ethylenediamine dihydrochloride in alkaline conditions. The cationized lyocell fibers exerted a staining behavior similar to that of wool. No fiber damage occurred in the modified lyocell. Neither tensile strength nor fabric hand was compromised. 5 refs.
