Using a variety of spectroscopic, assay, and chemical oxygen demand methods, experiments examined the titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) assisted photodegredation of a laser dye under visible light irradiation. Initial irradiation of squarylium cyanine (SQ) dye in an aqueous TiO(2) dispersion generated an unstable superoxide radical that readily converted to hydroxide radicals. Cyanine carbon-carbon double bond cleavage dominated the degradation process. The data suggested a detailed pathway that involves SQ dye excitation rather than TiO(2) excitation and selective oxidation of the carbon-carbon double bond. 25 refs.
