An overview of disperse dye behavior during the dyeing of polyester fibers includes discussions of simplified batch dyeing, thermofixation, continuous coloration, thermomigration, colorfastness testing, the nature and distribution of disperse dyes, sorption and desorption in microfibers, carriers, leveling agents, and finishing chemicals. Thermomigration, a migration phenomena in which disperse dyes and other chemicals move to locations where they have lower chemical potentials and where evaporation is most likely, directly affects washfastness and abrasion fastness testing of polyester and polyester blend fabrics. 29 refs.
