A decrease in interfibrillar cohesion renders lyocell fibers prone to wet fibrillation that can be controlled to create novel fabric surface effects. A typical processing sequence to attain peach skin effects includes open width desizing, singeing, primary fibrillation in an aerodynamic machine under alkaline wet conditions in rope form at high temperature, subsequent treatment on the same machine with enzymes, and the application of a mild crosslinking agent for stability. The new treatment can be combined with dyeing. Dyeing with bifunctional and multifunctional reactive dyes imparts similar effects, the extent of which depends on dye structure, number and position of reactive groups, and type of chromophoric groups. 1 ref.
