Researchers developed a dye for silk based on the red flowers of the gulmohr tree, which grows throughout the tropics. An acidic extraction method and post mordanting produced good shades. The optimal concentration for dyeing was 3 grams of gulmohr flower in 100 milliliters of water containing 1 percent hydrochloric acid. Optimal dye extraction and dyeing occurred in 60 minutes. Optimal mordanting occurred in 30 minutes. Samples showed fair to excellent rubfastness. Light brown silk samples demonstrated good to excellent wet rubfastness. All samples exhibited good to excellent fastness to sunlight after 8 hours of exposure and poor to fair fastness after 40 hours of exposure. 3 refs.
