Computer color matching (CCM) techniques reduce energy and labor costs and increase the accuracy of operations in dyeing facilities. CCM predicts formulas for shade reproduction. Each system involves color measurement via a spectrophotometer, logic software to express the numerical color value, and computer hardware for data processing. CCM can also be used to study tailing of reactive dyes and batch-to-batch variation in dyeing facilities or textile mills, particularly for such shades as khaki, olive green, and navy blue, which are dyed in large quantities and have rigid acceptability standards. The system allows for shade correction on a substrate if the first dyeing is insufficiently deep. CCM fully utilizes residual print paste. Other advantages include shorter formulation times, the generation of alternate formulations, minimum metamerism, and reduced dye inventories. 17 refs.
