Because cotton denim yarns dyed with indigo dyes have a ring dyed effect in which only the outer surface o the yarn is dyed, washing processes can impart a variety of surface effects to denim fabric. Popular washing techniques include conventional washing, stone washing, acid washing, denim bleaching, caustic washing, bata washing, and sand blasting. Conventional washing involves desizing with amylase enzymes and detergent washing to produce a uniform fading and a softer fabric hand. Stone washing produces more pronounced but less uniform fading. Acid washing involves dry tumbling with pumice stones presoaked in a 5-10 percent solution of sodium hypochlorite and results in nonuniform, sharp, blue and white contrasts.
