A study evaluated the advantages of softening the water used in silk wet processing. Researchers compared the effects of Borewell hard water (250 ppm) with the effects of water softened via a commercially available cationic water softener on the silk degumming, bleaching, dyeing, and printing processes. Gum loss and whiteness for soft water samples were better than that for hard water samples and used 20 percent less chemicals. Color strength of fabric samples dyed in soft water was greater than that of fabrics dyed in hard water.
