Researchers studied the colorfastness of environmentally improved fabrics. Fabrics used in the study included Fortrel Ecospun, Tencel, low impact dyed cotton, and organically grown cotton. The study dyed the fabric samples and subjected them to accelerated exposure to light or laundering with a variety of detergents. A HunterLab Spectro-Colorimeter using the CIE 1976 L*a*b* color difference equation measured the color changes in the fabric samples. The light blue, low impact dyed cotton and the cream colored organically grown cotton samples showed the greatest overall color change after exposure to light. All samples, however, showed significant color changes after 40 AFUs. The organically grown cotton fabric sample laundered with Ecover detergent showed the greatest overall color change. 5 refs.
