Starch applied to cotton and cotton/polyester apparel can protect people who work with pesticides against contamination. Starch binds with most pesticides so that there is no contact with the skin. Washing then removes the pesticides and starch. Although starch stiffens the fabric, it is more comfortable than many of the designs used in protective apparel, particularly in hot, humid climates. Starch does not interfere with moisture vapor transport. The use of other pesticide-binding finishes could eliminate the problem of stiffness. Technical report.
