Supercritical CO₂fluid as an alternative dyeing medium causes changes in the fibre structure depending on the temperature and pressure of the treatment. An investigation was made of the changes in crystalline orientation in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres under the influence of supercritical CO₂. The changes were investigated by wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) and compared with changes caused by conventional aqueous dyeing and hot-air treatment. It was found that the orientation parameter was very slightly increased after treatment with no influence of the medium used. The treatments were carried out with the samples wound on to a cylinder. The taut position of the fibres was the reason for only slight changes in the orientation of the crystallites.
