Technologies for color removal of a highly colored industrial waste stream were previously evaluated. A mixed stream with specific concentration and peak absorbance values exceeding 500 absorbs was the target for this experimental study. Initial bench scale testing indicated that ozone was the only viable technology. A pilot scale ozone unit was developed and used to determine ozone dosages necessary to treat the waste stream. The diverse nature of the waste stream did not allow for the generation of a representative sample through periodic sampling. A dynamic model was developed to determine the general output requirements of a fullscale ozonation unit using inputs of waste product amount, water amount, and necessary color reduction limit. The resulting unit will be utilized to treat the whole wastestream. Results from the model indicated that there is a specific asymptotic trend relating color reduction limit to ozone dosage.
