Researchers investigated the effects of heat setting temperature and treatment time on the dyeing of polyester fabrics with two structurally different disperse dyes. Although heat setting was necessary for dimensional stability, heat setting conditions exerted a greater influence on dyeing behavior. Polyester fiber exhibited greater dye absorption at temperatures above 180 degrees centigrade for 270 seconds due to structural reformation of the polymer. Temperatures above 210 degrees centigrade or longer treatment times initiated polymer decomposition. 8 refs.
