ITMA 1999 featured trends in color management, including quality control, process control, production management, and printing technologies, but lacked major advances in basic color technology. Developments in software, however, expanded the applications of imaging systems. Erhardt + Leimer and Mahlo displayed quality control equipment. EVS of Israeli exhibited a testing machine that detects defects as small as 0.5 millimeter at 300 meters per minute. Improvements in process control involved keyboards and video processing. Almost all systems ran on local area networks. Exhibitors did not show much interest in standardization above the machine level, though some based their systems on SCADA applications. Some technical problems with ink chemistry in the ink jet printing sector were resolved. Most visitors focused on increased speeds, small lot manufacturing, and sampling.
