Four research and development issues will challenge the dyeing and processing sectors into the next century: environmental pressures, innovations in coloration resulting from new fibers and fabrics, new chromophores, and improved processes developed in response to global economic pressures. Researchers will address environmental issues in the development of mordant and metal complex dyes, reactive dyeing systems for cellulosic fibers, nonaqueous dyeing systems, effluent and water recycling, and technologies for eliminating absorbable organohalogens. Technology already exists for total recycling of dyehouse water. Reactive disperse dyes are necessary for improving the dyeing of microfiber blends of polyester and nylon and to improve the wetfastness of nylon. Biotechnology will help provide feedstock for polyester fibers and enable the manufacture of new manmade fibers and fabrics in commercial quantities, 33 refs.
