Direct dyes dye cellulosic fibers without the use of a mordant. Most direct dyes are azo compounds, many of which are carcinogenic. Dyes need to contain an unbroken conjugated system. In benzene, the double and single bonds alternate back and forth. The frequency of the vibration corresponds to the wavelength of light absorbed by the dye. Effective dyes demonstrate linearity, planarity, and isomerism in their chemical structure. Theories that explain the dye/fiber relationship include hydrogen bonding, van der Waal's forces, the Nernst isotherm, the Langmuir isotherm, and the Freundlich isotherm. Factors that affect dye substantivity include dye concentration, dye affinity, electrolyte concentration, temperature, liquor ratio, pH, and fiber type.
