Researchers investigating micronaire and maturity variations in cotton mixing to control color nonuniformity in dyed fabrics measured the reflectance values of dyed knit fabrics manufactured from single and mixed cotton yarns. Experiments showed that variations in the reflectance values arose from variations in dye on the fiber cross sections, yarn denier, tightness or length of yarn, and spacing between wales or knit loops in fabrics. In dyed fabrics, color unevenness kiminshed by 10 percent as the samples moved from light to medium shades. From light to dark shades, the average reduction was 17 percent. In light and medium shades, color unevenness was 20 percent less in fabrics manufactured from combed yarns. 3 refs.
