Researchers investigated the effect of ultraviolet (UV) light on direct dyed fabrics and determined methods to improve their lightfastness properties. Testing materials included desized cotton fabric, direct dyes, dosium chloride and sodium carbonate as electrolytes, and scetic acid and Indofix as aftertreatments. A UV radiation chamber exposed samples to UV light. AATCC methods evaluated the washfastness, lightfastness, and crocking of treated and untreated samples. A panel of 50 judges visually inspected fastness properties as well. Results revealed that UV light exposure affects the physical and colorfastness properties of dyed cotton fabric. However, UV light had little effect on fabric count, thickness, and weight. 5 refs.
