A series of batch and continuous tests evaluated the feasibility of color removal from dye wastewater by oxidizing recalcitrant compounds with hydrogen peroxide at low temperature in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst. Transition metal doped catalyst, prepared by impregnating magnesium oxide with transition metals, served as the catalyst in the oxidation reaction. Batch tests using simulated dye wastewater prepared with soluble or insoluble dyes demonstrated that the oxidation technology was effective for two different dye types. A continuous test fed wastewater from a dye manufacturing plant to a fluidized bed reactor. During 30 days of operation, the novel oxidation technology completely decolored the wastewater and reduced chemical oxygen demand by 30 percent. 12 refs.
