The ozone fading of indigo dyed apparel is a function of indigo oxidation and oxidation byproducts. The fading rate of indigo dyes and yellowing of apparel depend on the position of the dye in fiber, absorption and diffusion of moisture into the fiber, humidity, protective finishes, and ozone concentration. One gram of ozone destroys 10.9 grams of indigo dye. Yellowing, which results primarily from the oxidation of indigo, is proportional to the amount of backstaining during washing. Antriedeposition chemicals in the desizing and abrasion baths prevent redeposition of the released dye by suspending the dye particles in the bath. Conventional antioxidants provide only short term protection against ozone fading. Selected amine based softeners offer indigo and sulfur dyes better protection against ozone fading.
