An overview of issues in fabric whitening addresses the effects of the electromagnetic radiation in sunlight, light reflection and transmission, fluorescence, fabric whitening processes, fluorescent brightening agents (FBAs), ultraviolet absorbing agents, sun protection factor ratings, and the influence of fabric structure on light transmission. Many studies suggest that FBAs in laundry detergents change the colors of dyed fabrics and chemically damage many types of fibers. The factors that influence ultraviolet transmission through fabrics include fiber type, fabric structure, porosity, weight color, and fabric hydration. Ultraviolet absorbing agents include Cibatex upf, Cibafast w. Cibatex APS, Sumisorb 250, Sumisorb 300, and Sumisorb 400.
